I make abstract paintings to test the tension between individual action and the structures we exist within.

I work with saturated shapes against fields that are flat, opaque, or transparent.

Color is structural not emotional, but every edge is freehand.

I work one decision at a time, within a set amount of time, under one central rule: no erasing or second thoughts.

Once something enters the painting, it stays, and the next decision has to respond to it.

The painting becomes a system in which nothing is independent: every shape is under pressure from what surrounds it.

Each painting can begin from any previous one, creating a continuum where forms and relationships return and change, making the body of work more important than any single piece.

Painting is how I find out what happens to a system when everything in it pushes.

This is close to how I experience life: we shape and are shaped by one another, and by the larger systems we live within.

Even the empty space holds its ground. It pushes back.
